Adverse effects of Cialis

Adverse Effects

While the desired effect of taking Cialis is the relaxation of the muscles within the penis, which allows the enhanced blood flow necessary to maintain an erection, thereby treating impotence, there are some side effects. The main one, found in approximately 11-15% of patients, was headaches. Other common side effects include dyspepsia, or indigestion (4-10% of users); back pain (3-6%); myalgia or muscle pain (1-4%); flushing (2-3%) and  limb pain 91-3%).

Effects on the Cardiovascular System

Some serious cardiovascular events have also occurred during the use of Cialis. These problems have included myocardial infraction, sudden cardiac death, stroke, chest pains, palpitations and tachycardia. However, it is not yet known if these events have any association with Cialis, whether they occurred after the use of the drug, or during or after sexual intercourse. These events could be due to the sexual routine or underlying cardiac conditions and diseases of the patient.

NAION

There have been a small portion of cases in which vision has been lost in one eye after the taking of Cialis. This vision loss is commonly known as Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy, or NAION, and is caused by blood flow being blocked from the optic nerve. Again, it is not clear yet if Cialis does cause NAION, but the initial indication suggest that it may have an impact on eyesight.

Taking Cialis

In order to avoid these adverse effects it is important that you take Cialis as directed by your health care provider. Each dose should be taken with a full glass of water, and never more often than directed.  It is important to remember that as with any drug, an overdose can significantly damage your health. It should also never be taken with alcohol, as this can increase the risk of headaches, dizziness, and increased heart rate.

If you experience any of the following during sexual intercourse it is recommended that you refrain from further intercourse:

·         Dizziness

·         Nausea

·         Angina

·         Pain, tightness, discomfort, numbness or tingling in the chest, arms, neck or jaw

You should also immediately notify your health care provider in these cases.  You should also seek advice in any case when an erection lasts for over four hours, as this can cause damage to the penis.
